Organization Structure
Mbale Clinical Research Institute (MCRI) operates within a robust framework that ensures excellence in research and innovation. As part of our multidisciplinary approach, we focus on impactful clinical trials and research supported by functional groups that enable collaboration and efficiency.
Our Team and Activities
MCRI employs a diverse team of dedicated professionals, currently coordinating over 60 clinical trials and studies. With around 250 staff members, our work spans various health challenges and innovative solutions.
Functional Groups
To support research activities, MCRI has six functional groups. These groups allow staff to contribute across multiple studies, fostering a collaborative and dynamic research environment.

Organization Chart
Departments
Administration & Management
Our administration and management team support all of the clinical and research activities of MCRI. MCRI Administration has rationalized all the best-practice processes, procedures, and policies which are trademark of the department. This section of MCRI embraces Human resource services, Finance, Logistics and procurement, and ICT which has enormously contributed to the operational successes of the entire institute.
Laboratory
Our Laboratory has brought together highly qualified professionals with a focus on cutting-edge personalized diagnostics that leverage decades of clinical laboratory and research experience within the institute laboratory. MCRI Laboratory provides a wide range of safety and efficacy testing to the study participants for the different trials.
Data Management Centre (DMC)
MCRI Data Management Centre (DMC) is in charge of handling all the institute’s data activities in clinical study trials at MCRI. The DMC upholds all the institute’s core values including accuracy in clinical data captured and stored. Personnel takes the lead and charge for coordinating and ensuring data entry, cleaning, storage, and access. In addition, all data management personnel have been trained in study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as well as Human Research Participants Protection (HRPP) to mention but a few.
ICT Department
The information and Communication Technology (ICT) department drives all the research institute’s technology and Infrastructure i.e. ICT Operations, R & D, and ICT Strategy. ICT is responsible for setting up enterprise systems as well as ensuring that the company ICT systems and network are fully operating on a day-to-day basis as well as protecting the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability of the data employed within the organization while providing value to the way we conduct research. From a broader view, the department handles the research institute’s networks, servers, databases, security, data, etc. in addition to building and maintaining enterprise systems to support the institute’s research.
Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)
MCRI- Clinical Trials Unit (MCRI-CTU) is specialist unit which is set with a specific remit to design, conduct, analyse and publish clinical trials and other well-designed studies.
It was formed in 2022 to ensure the delivery of high quality research in Eastern Uganda and composed of a scientific, clinical and operational team including, Statisticians, Health Economists, Qualitative research experts, Data Managers and Trial managers.
Community Engagement
Community engagement is your first critical step toward reaching service sustainability. The goal of engagement is to create supportive, long-term community relationships that are mutually beneficial for the health, strength and well-being of the community. Community engagement in clinical research is a dynamic and interactive relationship between researchers, policy-makers and the community. MCRI encourages this engagement; some of the projects it carries are often oriented towards building interactive engagement with end-users of research results.
